The Central University “Marta Abreu” of Las Villas (UCLV) was symbolically founded in 1948. Its official constitution was made by means of Presidential Ordinance on October 16th 1948. However, this Institution began its academic activities on November 30th, 1952 which is the day of its official anniversary. The University was named after the patriot and benefactor Marta Abreu de Estévez (1845-1909).
The UCLV is one of the most multidisciplinary Cuban Higher Education Institutions and it is one of the largest and most complex. UCLV with an enrolment of more than 5000 undergraduate students on campus and more than 15 000 students located off-campus has 13 faculties (Social Sciences, Humanities, Psychology, Law, Economic Sciences, Industrial Engineering and Tourism, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Architecture, Chemistry and Pharmacy, Mathematics-Physics-Computer Sciences, Education and Information Sciences and Agricultural Sciences). The UCLV offers their students a wide choice of 32 degree courses and more than 50 postgraduate degrees, including 12 PhD Programs and 41 Master Programs. This year the UCLV has received more than 250 foreign scholarship holders from more than 60 nationalities. An important characteristic of this university is that it attracts students from all the regions of the country as well as foreign students. The missions UCLV try to achieve are summed up in the following words: integral training, postgraduate education and relevant sustainable research.
