Since it was founded in the year 1450, the University of Barcelona, has played an important role in providing academic and scientific services to the community. As an integrant part of Catalan society, the University has witnessed the various changes and events that have marked Barcelona's history and the history of Catalonia and Spain. The balance between tradition and modernity that characterizes the UB has made it a point of reference in research and higher education.
In its nineteen centres, the University offers the widest range of subjects of all the Catalan institutions of higher education to more than ninety thousand undergraduate and postgraduate students studying on campus or online. As from the academic year 2009-10, the UB will begin to offer 49 new bachelor's degrees designes according to the directives of the European Higher Education Area and 130 official master's degrees. As a research institution, the UB is among the leading Spanish universities in the principal international rankings. It is the only Spanish university ranked among the 200 leading universities in the world and the 100 best universities in Europe. Thanks to its research prowess, the UB plays a predominant role in achieving scientific, technological, intellectual and cultural progress in Catalonia, and the work of its researchers can be read in the most prestigious publications in the scientific community. The UB is a city university with close historical ties to Barcelona, and its campuses are located within the inner city, thereby fostering the necessary symbiosis between the university and its urban surroundings. Its presence in the centre of the city has awarded it the status it carries as Barcelona's principal university.
Finally, the UB also attempts to prioritize those aspects of student life which may not be exclusively related to studies, to facilitate its members' access to information and services of every type and to support and promote those members' organization of and participation in cultural, sporting and advocacy initiatives of all kinds.
